DIY Chalk Paint Review

Sunday, January 15, 2012

I finally did it!  I made my own Chalk Paint!  I have been dying to get my hands on some ASCP, but haven't wanted to cough up the money.  I have seen so many recipes for making your own chalk paint, but just haven't done it yet.

Yesterday I was debating on what I want to do with painting my kitchen table and really wanted to use chalk paint instead of regular.  That is when I remembered this recipe from the The Liz Marie Blog...I happened to have everything on hand to try it and decided to give it a whirl.  What do you think?

This was the ultimate test for this DIY recipe because this is what the I was working with...

I stripped the black paint from the seat of the chair in order to stain it and I left the rest black.  I know that with Chalk Paint that you are not supposed to have to use a primer, so this was the ultimate test going from black to white, with no primer.  {I also like the mixture of the brown and black underneath with the distressing}.

I am happy to say that I got this look from only two coats of paint!  My favorite part was that there was no dripping! I absolutely hate painting things like these chairs with designs and curves, where I tend to get a lot of dripping.  It also dries very quickly, which is fabulous for n impatient person like me!

The main thing about this recipe of Chalk Paint is that it is a little gritty from the tile grout, so it does require sanding when you are complete.  It didn't bother me with this piece, since I was planning on heavily distressing it anyway.

I am not sure if the paint would hold up to being stored, so I only mixed a cup at a time in a separate container.  I didn't use even close to a full cup of paint for this chair.

P.S.  I used grey grout because that is what I had on hand and there was no change in color to my paint.  I also used an Eggshell paint because I didn't have Flat on hand and it worked out just fine.

How about you guys, have you tried this recipe or any other ones?  How did you feel abou it?

Wow... Honestly, I've wanted some chalk paint to use in my son's room, but like you, I didn't want to cough up the money. I didn't even know you could make your own chalk paint! I'll definitely have to try this out.

I just bought some ASCP. But I wanted to try it and try the homemade stuff on something else to see if there was really much of a difference. Your chair looks fantastic. Nice work.

Your chair looks amazing!

I just did the DIY chalk paint on a *laminated wood* bookshelf. It distressed almost too easily. I'm waiting to see how it stands up to life before I redo the other bookshelf. I used plaster of paris and a mix up paint from Lowes (valspar exterior satin something)

So beautifully distressed! I have thought about making my own chalk paint too- I usually use just plain satin latex, but appreciate your review-did you need to seal the top coat with anything?

I made my own chalk paint this week too...I read one reader said when using the unsanded grout that the smell was bad, so I chose to try it out with 1/2 cp plaster of paris, 1/2 cup hot water...whisked together...then added 1/2 cp flat or satin paint. I also added about 2 tbsp of glaze when I needed it to dry slower when I was dry brushing it for a particular look. Worked great! Used Johnson's paste wax on hand and love it so far.

Thanks so much everyone!

I just sealed mine with a coat of Poly and it seems like it will hold up just fine. This was definitely a good choice for the chairs, since I was planning on them being highly distressed, but I don't know that I would choose this method if not because of the graininess that needed to be sanded away...

I am sure it doesn't even compare to the real ASCP, but it was still fun and game me the results I was looking for :-)

P.S. I do not have any weird smell from the grout - hopefully I won't in a couple weeks or anything ;-))

Just tried this recipe -- I'm still waiting for the pieces to dry but I do see the gritty lumps in the finished product. I'm thinking that as you said, if you're going for a distressed, sanded look, this will work fine. Just tried it on small pieces for now.
