Ombre Chair

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Ombre - Comes from the French word meaning shaded or shading.

I'm sure you've noticed the explosive trend of Ombre hair and fashion filling the streets of Hollywood.

Even if you weren't aware of the term Ombre I'm sure you've spotted the ever popular hairstyle trend, seen by the likes of Drew Barrymore & Klohe Kardashian and all the multitudes in between.

ombre hair trends, celebrity hair, drew

celebrity hair trends, ombre hair

As any trend goes, it has spilled over into home decor & furniture and I LOVE it!

I have had this tired old chair sitting in our garage for weeks and I had lost all inspiration for it.  I knew I wanted to do something different from the chairs I've done in the past.  Then yesterday it hit me...Ombre!!

I picked up 3 cans of spray paint and if you've read my paint reviews post then you know spray paint is not my first choice, but for this type of project I knew it would be perfect.

So here she is...

What do you think? Do you love the Ombre style as much as I do?

Identical or Fraternal Twins...

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Today's post is a followup to last week's chair post.

I finally got around to painting the second chair and decided to go a little different route with this one.

I originally planned to paint this chair exactly like the other one, but then decided against it.  I  picked a complimenting fabric and color so that they could be used together or separately.

In case you didn't catch the before here is a refresher...

So what do you think?  Do you prefer identical or fraternal twins?

If you haven't already done so...don't forget to sign up for the fabulous giveaway that ends on June 2nd!

You get to pick an item of your choice and help a great cause at the same time...

Every Ride was Closed at Dinseyland!

Sunday, May 20, 2012

Oh how I love a good makeover!  Nothing pleases me more than finding a hideous piece of furniture that would soon be headed for the dump and to make it over into something that someone will treasure in their home.
My most recent makeover is just that (I hope)...

painting chair, reupholster, diy, fabric

I went to our citywide garage sale last month and had seriously been looking forward to this day like I was an 8 year old headed to Disneyland for the first time!  Unfortunately it was not what I had anticipated :-(

It was like going to Disneyland with the thousands of people and every ride being closed for repair.  The streets were packed and I couldn't find ANYTHING.  It was beyond disappointing.

Just as I threw a fit like a 2 years old and called it a day  we were headed home we passed two houses where I found a couple items that were perfect for my needs.  The first was this desk that I scored for $15 and the second were these 2 horrible chairs sitting that were destined for the dumpster.

I had been looking all over for a chair to redo ever since I remade these chairs and I couldn't resist the price tag of $5 for this ugly things.  I knew they had beauty hidden underneath.
I had sample pieces of fabric lying around that matched perfectly with a little sample jar of CeCe Caldwell's paint.

I still have one more identical chair that I am hopefully making over today to show you soon.

Hope you all are having a fabulous and productive weekend as well!

On the same wall I have my gate turned herb garden and I am so excited to show you this most recent picture because my herbs are growing!!

Here is the completed look...

A far cry from this!  The black table, green curtains and white walls are GONE!!  Whoo Hoo!!

Impossible is No Longer Impossible!

Monday, January 30, 2012

I did it!  I finally finished my project for the challenge, just in time!  I have to be honest with you...when I first took the challenge of re-doing my kitchen table I really didn't think it would be all that impossible...I just needed a kick in the pants to get it done.  Boy was I wrong!  It wasn't impossible, but there were moments right up until  the very end that I thought it was going to be an ultimate FAIL!!

I knew I wanted something unique for this table that would be the center piece for the dining room, but I wasn't quite sure which direction I wanted to go in.  That was until I spied me some bold Tangerine!

I have to admit as excited as I was, I was also frightened that I might be making a HUGE mistake!  I started with the chairs in a more subtle, but very distressed look...

This was also my first attempt at making my own chalk paint {to learn more about this process click here}.

I decided that I wanted to do the table with tangerine legs and a white top.  Well, this is where I almost gave up :(  I finished the table after so much hard work and brought it inside.  WOW was it blinding!  It just did not look right!!  My sweet husband walked in and very politely said, "Ummm so do you like it?" while secretly praying I would say "No" ha ha!  Lucky for him I did :)

Sorry I have no photos ~ I was way too eager to get that thing out of the house!

I was back at the drawing board and really didn't want to start this project all over again.  In my head I knew that the table would work if I painting the white part of the chairs the same blue as my hutch, but I just did not have the energy to re-paint all of those chairs!  So I decided to re-paint the top of the table blue and guess what?  It was the perfect solution!! Get ready for picture overload...

I only wanted to very lightly distress the table so it had a much cleaner feel - for this reason I chose not use the Chalk Paint Recipe I just used regular old primer and paint for the table and I am very happy with that decision.

So what do you think?

How about you all?  Are you taking the challenge?  If so let me know so I can take a peak at your projects :)

DIY Chalk Paint Review

Sunday, January 15, 2012

I finally did it!  I made my own Chalk Paint!  I have been dying to get my hands on some ASCP, but haven't wanted to cough up the money.  I have seen so many recipes for making your own chalk paint, but just haven't done it yet.

Yesterday I was debating on what I want to do with painting my kitchen table and really wanted to use chalk paint instead of regular.  That is when I remembered this recipe from the The Liz Marie Blog...I happened to have everything on hand to try it and decided to give it a whirl.  What do you think?

This was the ultimate test for this DIY recipe because this is what the I was working with...

I stripped the black paint from the seat of the chair in order to stain it and I left the rest black.  I know that with Chalk Paint that you are not supposed to have to use a primer, so this was the ultimate test going from black to white, with no primer.  {I also like the mixture of the brown and black underneath with the distressing}.

I am happy to say that I got this look from only two coats of paint!  My favorite part was that there was no dripping! I absolutely hate painting things like these chairs with designs and curves, where I tend to get a lot of dripping.  It also dries very quickly, which is fabulous for n impatient person like me!

The main thing about this recipe of Chalk Paint is that it is a little gritty from the tile grout, so it does require sanding when you are complete.  It didn't bother me with this piece, since I was planning on heavily distressing it anyway.

I am not sure if the paint would hold up to being stored, so I only mixed a cup at a time in a separate container.  I didn't use even close to a full cup of paint for this chair.

P.S.  I used grey grout because that is what I had on hand and there was no change in color to my paint.  I also used an Eggshell paint because I didn't have Flat on hand and it worked out just fine.

How about you guys, have you tried this recipe or any other ones?  How did you feel abou it?

Stalled...

Thursday, October 6, 2011

I am having the hardest time making decisions lately!  I have done so many projects on a whim because I am so excited and I rush to get it done without thinking it through...leaving me disappointed in a month because I know how I should have done them differently.  I end up wasting so much time and money re-doing things it is ridiculous!  My poor husband must think I'm crazy!!

I spray painted my bedroom dressers and my dining room table black right when we moved into our new house and I can't stand them ;-/  I must have been going through a Gothic period ha ha!  It's kind of like the year I planted tulips in the fall and once spring came I realized I had all planted all BLACK! They were quite beautiful, but a little color mixed in might have been a good idea...

I know what colors I am choosing for the bedroom dressers, but I cannot decide on what to do with my table...

I'm almost embarrassed to show the picture
I am thinking of possibly painting it white distressed and staining the top a dark walnut?  Or I may try just roughing up the black a lot more? Or doing a walnut stain with the black?  Or something completely different!!  Who knows...any thoughts...

Maybe I'm just the type of person who has to try something out before I can decide whether or not I like it?  In fact I seem to do this all the time with my clothes too!  I love them in the store and then I go to put them on the next day and wonder what on Earth I was thinking!  Maybe I have a problem??

I am just so fearful of re-doing my table again to have to re-do it again :-)  Kind of like my chairs...
at least they turned out okay after the days of frustration {I guess that's all that matters in the end}.

Hopefully I can get my act together this week and just make a decision, stay tuned...

Chair makeovers are complete!!

I am so excited to not only put this project behind me (click here to see why), but because I am finally happy with the outcome...

Before

After
I am not sure where these chairs will stay because they actually work in multiple rooms, unlike the first 3 attempts...For now I have one in the living room and one in the Master bedroom.  I am just happy they are finally out of the garage and that my favorite fabric is put to good use :-))

The final product of these chairs was actually so easy and took very little time.  I just used Ace Premium Primer spray paint in Red Oxide and finished it with a coat of Ace Clear Cote Gloss spray paint.  When spray painting I normally use a primer and follow with the color I want, but in this case the only color I could find that I wanted was in the primer.  This turned out just as I wanted though.  For the seat I just unscrewed the old seat, vacuumed it off and stapled my new fabric on :-)  How much easier could it be.  Now if only I started out on the easy road the first time...
