If you have a little of this...

 or this...

or a couple of these...

in your home, like I do, then this post is for you!

Ok, so I am a little obsessed with a clean smelling home, but I also have 2 dogs, a kids still in diapers and I LOVE to cook...which doesn't always go hand in hand.

For instance ~ I make yummy Tastes Like Lasagna Soup {which by the way is the best soup ever!!} for the family, clean dishes, go to bed, head to church the next day and when we return (with guests) I walk in the door and want to die with embarrassment!  All I can think about is that they are probably looking for any excuse to run out of our house because they can't possibly hold their breath any longer!  Why is it that some smells just take over the house!!

The only thing that is worse to me than left over food smell is a bad air freshener.  I will spend an hour in the candle isle with my daughter smelling all the candles and walk away with the perfect candle only to light it at home and have my dear husband walk in and say, "what is that smell?!!"

I have recently Pinned a couple interesting alternatives to making a house smell fresh.

First I thought I would try out this tea light in coffee idea.  Unfortunately, I didn't have much luck with this method.  I was super bummed because I LOVE the smell of coffee.  But only by the time my tea light was almost burnt out, could I finally get a little whiff of coffee.  I would go through a million tea lights this way.

So I thought I would give this DIY plug in a try.

I am happy to report that it worked like a charm!  I bought some Peppermint oil and put it in there with a little water and plugged it in and whalah!  Our house now smells fresh and inviting!  Also, a little side fact, peppermint is hated by these little guys...

How about you all?  Do you have any tricks to keeping a fresh smelling home?

P.S. This post will be featured at Mom's Fun Money this week. While you are there make sure to check out her fabulous giveaway that ends soon...you could win concert tickets!!

For me, it's just all about staying on top of the things that cause odors in the first place. I just try to keep a very clean house (although messy at times). I think airing out the house can be helpful sometimes too. I will also burn scented candles on occasion too.

I use a Sentsy lavender thingy that I love. And I have a vanilla plug in. Peppermint sounds good though. Maybe next I'll try that.

Too bad the coffee smell didn't work, but I love peppermint - I'll have to give this a try! I'd love it if you'd add this to my very first linkup party and giveaway today @ the Delectable Home.

I totally agree Kelly :-) I love spring and fall when I can leave my windows open all day. I definitely think one of the best things is to always clean up dishes and food right away. I hate dirty dishes left in the sink to stink up my house.

Hey, I have all of those things too! I had no idea about the peppermint- we had a mouse get into the kitchen last winter and ate through all of my spices- he's long gone now but I never want that experience again!
I'm hosting a favorite things linky party and would love for you to stop by and link something up!

Good to know! I never knew that about peppermint before.

We had a mouse problem last year and our last resort was putting peppermint oil soaked cotton balls in corners around the house and it did the trick :-) I have no idea if it works if it is in my air freshener, but one can hope right?

I love how this is not only inexpensive, but so much healthier than chemical infused scents. Thank you!

Haha, this post is SO right on time for me. I just came home from Bible Study, only to discover that the odor from yummy beef stew we ate for dinner was lingering unpleasantly. Ugh!! I wish I had a peppermint freshener right now!! I'll definitely be trying this out!

Thanks SO much for linking up!!!

Hi Brooke...I'm a new follower and love your ideas! Is that a Rottweiler in your picture? I have one too and she is a sweetie and I have a mini dachsund too that I rescued...same coloring but 2 totally different body types! They are so funny together. Anyway, with carpeting (which I hate) and 2 dogs and humidity down here..I need all the help I can get. I love a clean smelling home and thank you for the refill idea as I'm a pack rat too and don't ya know I had a bunch of these in a drawer! LOL! I too have gotten wiser and will be refilling mine with 100% natural oils! I love pine smell...not Pine-Sol smell but the real woodsy smells and apple too. I've also done cotton balls in obscure places but it's not as strong. I love the new Febreze ones but now I wonder if they have VOC's? I think I'll call them and ask...will they tell me? thanks so much! Love this post! I do lots of candles too since I am home most of the time. Wal-Mart has great BH&G candles..the big ones in a jar for $5.00 and I use the jars afterwards for storage around the house...kitchen items and crafts. Later!

can't believe I found this - perfect timing for me as well.. since,(I HATE to admit this - SO GROSS!) we found not just one mouse in our house! EW, I dont even want to come home anymore til I am SURE there will never be another. We caught 2 in traps, but they say if you see one, you can be sure you have MORE!!!! AAack! I am SO grossed out. I keep a fairly clean home - but getting a mouse makes you feel like the WORST housekeeper ever. I have 2 grown sons still at home and 2 big dogs (who should NOT be letting this happen)so that makes for alot of picking up, etc. *sigh* I will definitely try this trick - I love clean crisp smells. THANKS for the tip!!!
OH, p.s. can you give a tip on where a person would find these natural oils? candle dept?
I'm going out to look RIGHT NOW!!! already have a bunch of these wallflowers you pictured.... had no idea you could refill them!!!

Don't feel bad Tumbleweed :) We had a mouse problem last year and I was the same way! I would definitely make sure you stick some peppermint oil on cotton balls and put them in corners where you have seen or know the mouse has been. Also make sure you cut off their food supply (put dog and cat food in sealed bins, crackers and other box food in sealed containters, and make sure you seal your trash off somehow too - they can climb right up the side).

Sorry forgot to add that I got my oils in the natural food and product section at our grocery store...
